MID WEEK METRICAL

In an attempt to raise the tone of this blog, I have decided that every Wednesday we will try and improve our minds with poetry. Let’s start nice and easy, with a famous poem by acclaimed twentieth century British poet, Phillip Larkin.

This Be The Verse

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

  1. oh love it. I keep waiting for it to be October, so we can have a new Monthly Marcel! I was convinced it was already October this week, and had a note all ready to write to you. Then realized it was still September. oh well, soon enough, and now weekly poetry will keep us going. x

  2. I do find this poem hilarious! The idea that we all just pass the same packet of misery down is strangely compelling, though i hope not true!

Di, I have a brilliant one in mind for October . .

  3. Love the idea of the 'Midweek Metricals' 🙂 Loved this poem by Philip Larkin. So true! We know that it is better to break the cycle, but some things don't change and the show goes on and on. Sometimes one feels like laughing at it, and at other times one feels sad. Thanks for posting this wonderful poem. Looking forward to the next edition of Midweek Metricals' 🙂
